命名
就職前に最後の帰省をしました。
ぼくが帰省する少し前に従姉に女の子が生まれたので、ついでではありましたが、赤ん坊も見に行ってきました。彼女(子供)の名付けの話から話が弾んだのですが、そのとき初めて自分の名前の由来を叔母から教えてもらいました。いまさら名前の由来というのも変な話ですが、今までは名前の意味こそ知っていても、命名のいきさつというのは聞いたことがありませんでした。案外知らない人も多いのではないでしょうか。つまり、恩師に名を付けてもらうとか、姓名判断の本を調べるとか、時代や季節に関係づけるとかいったことですね。
さて、そのいきさつですが、ある雑誌の適当に開いたページに文章を書いていた人の名をそのまま使用する、というものです。具体的にどの雑誌だったかははっきりしませんでしたが、どうやら婦人雑誌だったようです。「クロワッサン」とか「家庭画報」あたりではないかと想像します。いいですね、この名付け方は。思い切りがいいし、過剰なこだわりもなくあっさりしていて衒いが感じられないのが良いです。名前の由来の話になったときに、過度なこだわりやら経緯があったりしたら嫌だなと思ったのですが、裏をかかれてほっとしました。ぼくにはこれより良い方法は思い浮かびません。
しかし、この方法で難しいのは何といっても雑誌の選定だと思います。もちろんペンネームの比率が高いであろう「文學界」や「群像」なんて文芸誌は論外。渋めねらいで「サライ」や「装苑」なんかにむかうのもちょっと違う感じがします。いま自分で選ぶならば、ある程度ニュートラルなところで「太陽」あるいは「暮らしの手帖」あたりがまぁ妥当かなと考えています。「どこが？」と思われそうですけれど。
ちなみに、猫に名前を付けるのは難しいというのはぼくの好きな格言の一つですが、もし猫を飼うことになったとしても、ぼくが付ける名前は「先生」で決まりです。
